In this short read, we’ll explore the connection between physical and work-life balance, delve into research and insights from experts like Kelly and Juliet Starrett, and challenge you with some fun balance tests that will not only amuse you but also highlight the importance of equilibrium in both personal and professional spheres. Additionally, we'll explore how modern solutions, including desks, chairs, and other tools, can be instrumental in supporting this journey towards a more balanced lifestyle.

The Link Between Physical and Work-Life Balance

Physical balance is not merely about being able to stand on one foot; it is an essential aspect of overall health and well-being. Achieving physical balance requires coordination, core strength, and body awareness. Interestingly, these attributes have a profound impact on our work-life balance as well.

Reduced Stress and Enhanced Focus:

Improved physical balance leads to better stress management. As we become more mindful of our body's movements and maintain better posture, our stress levels decrease, and our focus sharpens. This heightened focus can translate directly into increased productivity at work and a more present and fulfilling personal life. When you are trying to hold your balance, you’re hyper-focused and momentarily in the ideal state of flow often referred to as the “zone”. Incorporating balance exercises can help trigger flow state as it applies to other areas of your life.

Energy and Vitality:

When we maintain good physical balance through regular exercises and activities, our energy levels soar. We feel more invigorated and ready to tackle the challenges both at work and in our personal lives.

Increased Confidence:

Physical balance builds self-confidence, which positively impacts how we approach our professional and personal endeavors. A confident individual is more likely to take on new opportunities, leading to a more balanced and rewarding life.

Resilience and Adaptability:

Balance training not only improves our physical strength but also enhances our resilience and adaptability. When we stumble or face obstacles in life, the ability to regain balance swiftly allows us to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a stable work-life equilibrium.

Kelly and Juliet Starrett's Insights:

In their book "Built to Move," Kelly and Juliet Starrett, renowned experts in physical fitness and movement, emphasize the importance of balance in maintaining a healthy body and mind. Their Solec balance/fitness tests offer engaging ways to assess one's physical balance and make significant strides towards improving it. Let's see how in balance we really are with these 2 tests.

Balance Challenge #1 - Solec Test:

Stand with your feet together, arms at your sides, and close your eyes. Hold this position for 30 seconds, trying to maintain your balance without swaying or stumbling. If you find this easy, challenge yourself further by standing on one foot or on an unstable surface, like a balance board or cushion. This is a great balance exercise to incorporate into your standup desk or sitting break routine.

Balance Challenge #2 - Old Man Balance Test:

This is a more challenging balance test. One in five people fail this test. This is a great one to do every day when you put your shoes on. The goal is to balance on one foot while putting on your sock and shoe and tying that shoe, then repeating this on the other side.
